Hoya Optical Lawsuit – Data Breach of Medical Information
Consumer Protection Attorneys in California
On April 5, 2021, Hoya discovered that files on some of their servers and workstations in the U.S. had been encrypted in an apparent ransomware attack.
The Hoya team worked diligently to minimize the impact on their servers and operations, and to restore functionality. Hoya engaged an outside law firm and forensics experts to investigate the scope and impact of the incident, including investigating whether any data was taken by the attackers. Based on the investigation, which is ongoing, your personal information may have been acquired by the attacker.
Hackers Stole Patient Data During the Attack
Hoya learned on April 23, 2021 that the attackers published the information they had claimed to have stolen. Hoya expanded their outside team of experienced professionals to collect and review the data published by the attackers as thoroughly and quickly as possible.
Although their review of the information is still ongoing, it appears that it may include some Social Security numbers, and potentially other personal information.
Consumers Deserve the Highest Level of Security
While identity thieves are becoming more sophisticated at breaking through the data protection of businesses, it is the company’s responsibility to provide the highest level of security for their consumers.
This is especially true when medical information is involved. Medical information of the type lost here, is given special protection under California law.
